While making some good grub for the Editor and myself, the Lakers decided to play championship level defense. Well… not for the whole game but at least when it counts. They have yet to show that they can play that defensive level for the whole game but they did shut the Spurs down in the beginning and in the end of the game when it counts. The Spurs did make a run in the end coming within 2 points to make it exciting down the stretch. The Spurs our a championship level team, so it’s tough to keep them down with Popovich running the ship. If and when Ginobli comes back from his ankle injury, the Spurs have as good as a chance at the title as anybody in the league. You could almost call them the Dark Horse of the league.
The Lakers started Trevor Ariza in place of Luke Walton (apparently Luke convinced Phil Jackson to replace himself in the starting line up). Trevor is an energy guy and is important for the Lakers who sometimes can appear very lax.
The Spurs made a run in the end but LA played tight defense with some good stops by Vujacic to help keep San Antonio at bay. If the Lakes can get in the habit of playing tough defense there is a legitimate chance they can bring a championship to the city of Angels. Offensively the Lakers lead the league in points scored, so there is not much to worry about offensively. And let’s face it any team with Kobe on their squad would always be considered top three in offensive efficiency. In any case, not bad without Bynum in the line up.
