Hump Day

Two links here to get you through your undoubtedly terrible Wednesday afternoon:

Sports Illustrated has a solid Vin Scully profile (who will be back next year) for your reading pleasure. Sounds like Vinny could give John McCain internet lessons.

Very nice piece on Barry Zito and the challenge of pitching with a $126 million millstone around your neck. My standard rule of thumb is never to feel bad for a professional athlete, be it Vince Young, Ernest Graham, Bill Buckner, Alex Rodriguez or even BZ—they’re all doing what they (ostensibly at least) love and are getting paid truckloads to do it, which is more than most of us in cubicle hell can say. Still though, can’t help feeling a bit for Zito, I mean it’s not his fault the Giants overpaid for him and at least he’s out there every fifth day, unlike some other pitchers that I can think of (wait:Jason Schmidt is owned in .01% of ESPN fantasy leagues?!!?!?? WHAT?!?!??). From the Zito article:

“I wanted to be more ‘professional,’ ” he said. “This new guy. Because of the Contract, I wanted people to know I was serious about pitching, not this flaky guy. I allowed the seriousness of things to creep into my mind. The city. The Contract. The fans. My new teammates. I wasn’t a blue-collar Oakland guy anymore.”

Alright, that’s enough of that. Back to work, all of you.
