Any chance in hell the Braves would take a mulligan on the Edgar Renteria-Jair Jurrjens trade? After watching JJ blow the Dodgers down yesterday I went and checked Renteria’s stats (available on a fantasy waiver wire near you) and started to feel a little nauseas (note: I did draft Renteria as my shortstop in my fantasy league this year and am currently enjoying the JJ Hardy experience). Not only can Edgar no longer hit or run, he can’t play defense to save his life. I am fully expecting Justin Verlander to walk over and punch him in the neck after seeing another slow grounder make its way up the middle. Buster Olney noted yesterday that an AL scout felt that Renteria’s time in the majors may be limited because his arm is so weak now that he has to play 2 or 3 steps closer to home than most shortstops, allowing more and more grounders to slither into the outfield. Meanwhile, Jurrjens has given Atlanta a solid #2 behind Tim Hudson and looks to have his best years still in front of him. We’ve had a Barry Bonds sighting in Arizona. For a team starved for runs at the moment (nice job giving away Carlos Quentin and signing Eric Byrnes to a long-term deal) this might make some sense, even though convential wisdom has said if Bonds were to resurface it would be as a DH in the AL. Speaking of, AWFUL year for Designated Hitters so far this season.
